After a brief break from racing the 3G team returned to the desert debuting their brand new single seat 1600 car at the MORE Beard Shootout in Lucerne Valley. As with the prior two cars, this car was built and desing entirely in-house by Tom Craig. On a chilly, windy morning, Tom took the green flag and piloted the red rocket on its maiden voyage.
Tom got off to a great start, quickly passing two cars in the first 5 miles of the race. By the end of lap one, Tom had moved up to 3rd place on the road where the team would stay for the remainder of the race. After four clean laps, Tom turned the car over to Dave Girdner for the final 120 miles.
With average speeds typically around 50 MPH, areodynamics are not typically a factor in the handling of 1600 race cars. About 15 miles in to his first circuit, Dave reported that he thought he had a flat tire as the car was pulling hard to the right and would be stopping at a nearby pit. Well, there was no flat tire and it turns out what he was feeling was the strong winds tossing the little car around when he was airborn!
Besides the quick tire check on lap 5, had no other issues and brought the car home for a fine third place finish.
